The Redpath Lyceum Bureau was founded by James C. Redpath in 1868 as a commercial lecture bureau. In 1901, Keith Vawter purchased a one-third interest in the bureau, and in 1904 launched the first Chautauqua circuit. The Redpath Lyceum Bureau had offices in a number of locations including Cedar Rapids, Iowa; White Plains,New York; Columbus, Ohio; Chicago, Illinois, and; Kansas City, Missouri. Carl E. Backman was employed by the Redpath Bureau. He suceeded L. B. Crotty as manager of the Western Department in Chicago. He died in 1973. Carl Backman was married to Chautauqua performer Gay MacLaren. A wedding invitation in the collection indicates that they may have been married in 1937. MacLaren was a sucessful actress and singer, performing across the country. She wrote a book about her experiences on the Chautauqua circuit titled "Morally We Roll Along." From the descriptio...

William Ashley Sunday, Sr., American evangelist, was born November 19, 1862 in Ames, Iowa. After holding various jobs while completing high school, he was recruited to join the Chicago White Stockings, a professional baseball team. He committed his life to Christ in 1886 or 1887, upon following a street gospel band back to their mission. He married Helen Amelia Thompson in 1888.
